Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) is an ukiyo-e master who was active in the late Edo period, along with Hiroshige, Utamaro, and Sharaku.
Akafuji and Namifuji, which all Japanese have ever seen, have gained absolute reputation and popularity even today, and their position is not shaken.

This exhibition introduces the whole picture of Hokusai's art through 50 works including Hokusai's masterpiece "Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji" and other series such as "53rd Tokaido", Yokai-e and caricature paintings. In addition to exhibiting "Hokusai Manga", which triggered Hokusai's popularity overseas, especially in Western Europe, he also introduced "Eiffel Tower Thirty-six Views" by French painter Henri Livière, who is said to have been strongly influenced by Hokusai. We examine why Hokusai was highly evaluated from various angles and approach the secrets of its popularity.

Katsushika Hokusai 36 Views of Jigokudani River

Born in Honjo-ku, Katsushika-gun, Musashino country (currently Sumida-ku, Tokyo). Ukiyo-e artist who was active in the late Edo period.
In the turbulent life of about 90 years, Hokusai has left a huge number of works in the world in addition to 30 change and moving 93 times, in a life that is always chased by debt. And his work is a bold composition, such as Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji, with skillful lines and symbolic colors called Hokusai colors, and his original style of painting greatly influenced many painters. About 160 years after his death, he has gained more and more acclaim today, and has been widely attracting attention as a great artist in the world.

Henri Livierle | Henri Riviele （1864－1951）

A painter and printmaker who was deeply influenced by japonism, which became a boom in the French art world at the end of the 19th century.
Inspired by the ukiyo-e paintings of Hokusai and Hiroshige, Livière was influenced by Ukiyo-e, staring at the sights of France's nature and cities, and producing many works, mainly woodcuts and lithographs. In Japan, the 36 views of the Eiffel Tower, created after Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji, is widely known.
