「Naïvy」
"Naïvy" has been fascinated by capitan for more than 10 years. This series, which deals with themes such as adventure, attribution, and loss of innocent, is dedicated to the imaginary sea world where sailors, who are Capitan's Lost Naïvy [Navy], live. However, they are not the sailors we know. She wears traditional American sailor clothes during World War II, but her lower body is naked and embodies the contradiction of wanting both belonging to a group and individualist freedom. This is just one of the many dualities of "Naïvy" in a world swaying between play and danger, freedom and pitfalls, celebration and pessim, nostalgic and fear of the future. The person appearing in Capitan's photographs has a clumsy and immature human odor, but at the same time is almost mythical, and the limbs that sparkle in the water resemble a mysterious Marpeple (underwater) who travels and goes through various sexualities. The innocentness of the two angels-like children in the work "Swimming Pool in a Boat, Caribbean" (2020) gazing at the romantic sorrow of Horizon Sailor, like Caspar David Friedrich's Traveler on sea of clouds (around 1818). Do he intends to hold his finger with hope for the future, or is he trying to spread out so much of despair?
The unmanned landscape drawn by Capitan also shakes our hearts. In "Last Fruit at Midnight", one fruit hanging from a branch is placed at the center of the jet-black background at midnight, suggesting the world after death. On the other hand, "Tying a Boat to a Rock" is a work that gives you a playfulness like capitan. At first glance, a boat that looked overturned on a rough and dark sea, if you look closely, you can see that it was safely moored on a flooded land, and the fear quickly turns into relief. However, the potential sense of crisis continues to remain.
The whimsical emotions seen in Capitan's photographs show the concrete realities of found objects (the "founded object") and positive melodies throughout the exhibition. Through the intervening of embroidery in various forms, "founded" U.S. Navy sailor clothing is exposed to the process of generative change. He homages to Capitan's success in fashion photography, and even summons the subject of her photography through his absence. In this exhibition, as a new element of capitan's practice, the three flags of "Lost Naïvy", which had previously only two-dimensional sketches, will be exhibited as realistic real things. These flags seek to foster more flexible, citizenship, and mutual trust in our increasingly cracked world.
In recent years, Capitan has been trying media other than photography, but in order to complete this series, I went back to the darkroom and spent many hours renewing my familiarity with analog printing techniques. The C-type printed works were all hand-baked at the Labyrinth Photographic lab in London, along with John McCarthy, a long-standing co-producer and friend of Capitan. McCarthy is also a person who linked capitan and photography. There is a strange darkness among a series of works that try to make a match between innocent loss and maturity. The 10-year-old production of Naïvy is a footprint of the growth and progress of one artist, Capitan himself. In this exhibition, we will deliver the completed form of the series to everyone, together with the bittersweet Nostalgia related to the ending, with hope for the future of this wonderful young artist.

Coco Capitán Handwritten Statement
In search for an instruction manual for disappearing; which is very different from non-existing or ceasing to exist. Disappearing is about existing in the margin - very firmly existing, indeed - at the margin of the rest of existence.
Finding an instruction manual for "extinction" that is completely different from "not present" and "elimination of existence". "Extinction" means that it exists in the margin.……In fact, it exists very strongly.……In the margin of existence.
I wanted to be part of club, I wanted to get lost, but not on my own, I wanted to be part of a collective in which everyone was lost & could celebrate this uncertainty.
I wanted to be a member of the club, I wanted to get lost unexpectedly, I wanted to be a member of a group where everyone was lost and could congratulate him.
This became my Naïvy.
So my Naïvy was created.
My lost sailors & I in our ship left adrift in the middle of the sea.
My lost sailors and me in a ship drifting in the middle of the sea.
