Participating artist
SAMBYPEN
Born in 1992, Sanby Pen spent his childhood in Western Europe and the United States. I went on to Parsons School of Design in New York, but dropped out. I realized the similarity between the propaganda image of a socialist country and the sign of Times Square in New York, and began to create a parody of a commercial image. In 2015, Sanby Penn created a parody of Michelin's mascot, Bibandam, and began building his career as an artist. After his first solo exhibition, Sanby Penn has held numerous exhibitions and has grown into one of the most promising contemporary pop artists since his debut.
This artist, who runs through the spirit of parody, reinterpretes a combination of certain brands and culturally symbolic objects. Early works were based on personal emotions and experiences, but recent works explore the social issues surrounding us more. Artists create humorous reproductions of iconic paintings and film posters by sorting and adding context. He creates unique characters, configures graphics with text and images, and employs visual modules such as shape, size, and color to enhance the tactile experience.
In addition, SAMBYPEN is known for its unique approach that reverses technological development in modern society. He creates a digital graphic design on a computer, transcribed it into wood, and then cut it out with a machine. After manually painting the wood, it is finally implemented on the canvas. This painting technique combines a standardized square canvas with a freely bent wooden object to create a three-dimensional effect. Artists' desire to combine technology and hand-drawn colors is reflected in this technique that seamlessly blends modern innovation and classical methods.
According to artists, the purpose of art in society is to provide a unique experience to all individuals, as well as some privileged classes. Artists believe that this experience should help people get out of the limits of reality and look at the world from a new perspective through his artistic vision. SAMBYPEN aims to connect with audiences and give them the ability to be creative and free. We continue to create unique works that transcend genres, and collaborate with companies and brands.
Bazbon
Born in 1988, Basbon has been deeply interested in street culture, hip-hop, and subculture since childhood. He creates works spanning a variety of media, including illustrations, manga, paintings, and GIF animations. When I was a teenager in the early 2000s, I was exposed to various foreign cultures and arts due to the rapid spread of the Internet. He embraced "popular culture" as a great source of inspiration for his life and work, incorporating various elements into his art, including painting, manga, music, and camping.
Basbon embodys popular culture in his work in response to the emotions and sensations of modern society. Artists first create digital drafts, then use various materials such as acrylic, gash, watercolor, and markers to create the final artwork that demonstrates the characteristics of modern visual media and the concept of pop art. For example, his art toy means the potential of contemporary art and expands his spectrum in the world of art. One of his characters, "Shay Di," symbolizes the artist himself and his inner and emotions.
Basbon is a multidisciplinary artist who creates art in a variety of media, including painting, brand collaboration, illustration, art toys, and character design. The artist has collaborated with numerous well-known fashion brands such as "Nike", "Doctor Martins", "Ap", "MCM" and "Elesse".
N5BRA
1995-
N5BRA, also known as Nobra, started his career as an illustrator and later expanded his scope to painting. His unique name reflects playfulness and intense experience, allowing him to add logic to fragmented identity and freely express his way of life. His work initially focused on the human body, but gradually expanded to the theme of self-portrait and existentialism.
In his work, the body is an important element. The women's nude that appears repeatedly is the main subject and central theme of his work. Some interpret these nudes as a tool to objectify and others the woman's body, or to reveal sexuality linked to his pseudonym. However, in fact, his nude is a type of self-portrait. The eroticism of his work is derived from the existence of human beings and the anxiety it brings.
Through his art, N5BRA casts an antheistic question to the audience. These questions have shifted to oil painting, a new medium. Thick texture and multiple layers of oil paint show the process of artists who prove their existence in a meaningless emptiness. The medium of oil painting captures the intersection of experiential life and objective perspectives of N5BRA. This self-rooted existence and the desire to seek approval comes from an experience of anxiety without a clear object.
The person in his work reflects his inner confusion looking for the purpose and direction of life. The entangled curves are impressive, and the organic structure is not arranged for a single purpose, but emerges from countless strokes and accidental elements on the canvas, creating an abstract shape.
The inner anxiety and the suffering of life cannot be expressed with a simple plane or a single line. Overall, dark tone, deep contrast, unexpressed gaze of a person, undulating lines and brushing suggest long-standing anxiety that sank in calmness. The highlighted dynamism and randomness are arranged according to the unique sense of N5BRA, reminiscent of the life of chaos and stability, harmony and imbalance, progress and stagnation.
MAWZ
1992-
Artist MAWZ has been fascinated by Disney's animated films and manga since childhood. While studying art at Chuo University, artists created characters that represent themselves and painted the world through their eyes. The artist's stage name, MAWZ, was named after the characters of the early work. It was named inspired by the dream of the birth of a shark and the movie "Joez".
The artist's work explores surrealism and symbolism, conveys the message of realities, personal concerns, social situations, and aspirations. His work conveys social, cultural, and personal concerns using a symbolic image characterized by poetic symbolism and animated expression. The symbols used include envelopes, ribbons, eagles, etc., which can be interpreted in various ways based on the viewer's perspective. His recent work focuses on the absurdity of reality and the exploration of social issues. He always tries new materials, thoroughly investigates the background and history of the subject, adding depth to his work.
The feature of this artist is the use of machière, which is expressed in a simple and implicit expression with bright colors and thick brushstrokes. Before you start your work, the artist will carefully record what you want to convey and the story you want to convey. He draws inspiration and motivation from his imagination, the surrounding environment, and personal experience to draw a unique perspective on his work. His recent work emphasizes the background and three-dimensional elements rather than the characters and icons of the previous work, giving depth and highlighting the message. His animation style and expression captures deep concerns across different subjects and allows different interpretations among viewers.
Artists have tried a variety of media to refine and develop styles, and now they focus on two-dimensional paintings, but have expressed their desire to further expand into three-dimensional works. Artists have previously collaborated with various brands such as McDonald's, Volkswagen, Cass, and SM Entertainment to communicate with the general public. MAWZ uses the art production process as a means of expressing his personal exploration of the unknown future. He wants to share his journey with the audience in order to spread positive energy and convey the optimistic promises of life.
김둥지 Kim Doongji
1992-
Kim Dungji has continued his career as an artist through various group exhibitions and art fairs, including his first solo exhibition in Seoul this year.
Most of the artist's work is a reflection of the urban environment and his own views on it. From an early age, I traveled to various regions, and naturally became interested in the city where I live and the surrounding environment. Artists see cities as a component of people, architecture, and nature. The artistic elements of the city, such as cats, birds, and trees, are depicted on the canvas. They are located at the boundary between synthetics and nature, or between them. Artists see nature as an object away from the original habitat. Recently, it has been expanding to address the meaning and components of cities, and their relationships. Individuals who have become others, buildings that have lost functionality and aesthetic value while functioning as a monument to capitalism, and green spaces scattered in cities. Artists are paying attention to such urban phenomena.
Despite studying modern objects, expression techniques are classical. He recreates the legacy of past masters through a thick layer of oil paint and maximum texture. Get out of the past and sublimate it. Dundi portrays the people of the city with extremely simple shapes and colors. By eliminating individual characteristics and individuality, it feels like a part of life, not a specific individual. A minimal glimpse of shape and movement reflects the emptiness of human beings without bonds or empathy. By investigating the shades and desires of newly developed metropolitan areas and real estate, he considers urban architecture in its social context. Create miniature architecture twins using cement, the basic medium of modern architecture. In this process, you can mock modern architecture, which lacks both practicality and aesthetic value. The facade of buildings directly in contact with the human body is exposed.
Kim Dunji approaches the city from a more realistic and calm perspective, rather than sticking to what he cares about or fiction.
