To Kim Song | KIM SONGHE
Chandelier artist
Kim Songhee was born in Tokyo in 1982 as the third generation of Koreans living in Japan. He went to Korea School until the age of 18, and then went to Oda Fashion College. After graduating, he started his career as a writer, and became independent as a chandelier artist when the chandelier work exhibited at the select shop "Loveless" in 2005 attracted attention. Since then, he has been involved in providing works to companies and brands in Japan and overseas, spatial displays, and product design.
In 2009, he exhibited his works at the "U.S.B: Emerging Korean Artists in the World 2009" exhibition at the Hangaram Museum in Seoul, Korea, and at the SUPERFROG Gallery in San Francisco, United States, in 2016, published his first collection of works, TROPHY. At the same time, a large exhibition "Trophy" was held at Laforet Harajuku, which was well received.
Kim's works are made by collage of stuffed animals, American Toy, Daruma, beckoning cats, and kumade.
Kim's adoption of such a method, which is described as "Junk Corage," is not unrelated to Kim's origin of the third Korean resident in Japan. The work reflects Kim's ideal for multiculturalism, which had always been forced to live as a minority. That's why the work she creates seems to be a seemingly chastic "Junk", and the world is balanced in a strange balance.
