Greetings
In "TOKYO POP UNDERGROUND", Nanzuka cites the historical background unique to Japan and unravels the context of Japanese artists outside the framework of "art for art." Originally, in Japan up to Meiji period, most of the things considered by art and people were practical, and thus they developed together with popular culture. Books, folding screens, paintings on sliding-door panel, artefacts such as tea utensils and negoros, rooting as key chains, ukiyo-e as posters and bromides, and real artwork called "Ikiningyo", which was made for performances. And these "creatures" are originally "pop" because they are popular and are called "underground" in terms of academic art. In addition, in GLOBAL POP UNDERGROUND, the definition of Underground is now a counter to social situations in developed countries, which are now regarded as low for high, including Sex, Punk, Cyber, Science Fiction, Psychedelic, Street, and Manga/Otaku, which are now considered to be "low" to high (high). In other words, these can be called the trajectory of challenges to planned scenarios, protected values, and distorted and used civil emotions.
This exhibition JP POP UNDERGROUND is a miniature garden-like exhibition that has restarted from the ruins after the war and has been hit by several natural disasters, but is aiming for the future while overcoming the adversity. All Japanese artists who lived in the postwar period, such as Keiichi Tanaami, Hajime Sorayama, Harumi Yamaguchi, Toshio Saeki, and Hiroo Kikai, were not highly regarded in the Japanese art world until now due to their innovation and uniqueness. However, with the recent globalization of the art scene and the support of young artists, their reputation has been increasing again. I hope that this exhibition will be a singularity that embodies the intrinsic strength and intelligence of human creativity in the recent world situation, which has been hit by the threat of new viruses on a global scale.

■About NANZUKA UNDERGROUND
In 2005, he was established in Shibuya, Tokyo under the name of NANZUKA UNDERGROUND as an experimental gallery aiming to connect pop culture and contemporary art.
