Contents of the exhibition

In 2009, Ken Miller, former editor-in-chief of TOKION, published a photo book, Shoot: Photography of the Moment, from Rizzoli New York.
Starting with the exhibition held at the New Museum in New York on September 17, publishing commemorative events have been touring around the world, including London Tate Modern (October 9) and Amsterdam FOAM Museum (October 13). As part of this, in Tokyo, "SHOOT: Photography of the Moment" will be held at the Parco Factory as the 6th anniversary project commemorating the 40th anniversary of the opening of PARCO.

In this exhibition, about 60 works selected from the book "SHOOT: Photography of the Moment", which contains about 200 works by 26 photographers who are expected to be active from the 1990s and are expected to be active in the future, and a large number of unpublished works will be exhibited.
It is a unique opportunity to experience the world of photography that is a bit different from books, including talk shows by Ken Miller.

Ken Miller spoke to this exhibition as follows:

With the spread of inexpensive cameras that can be photographed without special technology, photography has become a part of everyday life, and the Internet and media are overflowing with photos. But in the beginning, the photos were more special. For a long time, and even now, he has established a solid position as a field of fine art. So, where are the boundaries between photographs that are overflowing in the world and photographs as fine art?

"SHOOT -Photography of the Moment-" began with the question "What is art photography?" Anyone can take a picture. But most of them are not photographers. What is a photographer? I like photos with a simple lens pointed to the events of the scene, and photos with honestly cut off feelings. They may seem to just capture everyday moments, but they are pictures with special powers that leave a strong impression on the mind. An impressive record that reflects everyday life, or a part of a sense of increased sense, exaggerated, parodyed, or romance was found in a small event.……。 I think good photographers are people who make such expressions possible using tools that anyone can use.

All the photographers in this book take pictures of everyday moments. Nowadays, photographs of these styles are also recognized as fine art, but until recently, snapshots were just snapshots.
Twenty-five years ago, Stephen Shore made a personal documentary that overturned conventional wisdom, compiled a photo of Nan Goldin's snapshot of his lifestyle, and then sublimated it into fine art and fashion photography for the first time. "Shoot" has become popular now, starting with them. It follows this style, that is, the trend of works that simply cut out common everyday life.

In "Shoot -Photography of the Moment", you may occasionally encounter photos that anyone feels like you can take.
But I think it was the work that the photographer himself became a curator and selected as “the only image that speaks more deeply about the emotions of the moment,” and the act of curation shows how to connect us with pictures and use photographs to cut out the air.
