Contents of the exhibition

In 2009, Ken Miller, former editor-in-chief of TOKION, published a photo book "SHOOT: Photography of the Moment" from Rizzoli New York.
Starting with the exhibition held at the New Museum in New York on September 17 as a commemorative event for publishing events around the world, including London Tate Modern (October 9) and Amsterdam FOAM Museum (October 13). As part of this effort, in Tokyo, we will hold "SHOOT: Photography of the Moment - A moment captured by the camera" as the 6th anniversary of the opening of the Parco Factory at the Parco Factory.

In this exhibition, works selected from the book "SHOOT: Photography of the Moment", which contains about 200 works by 26 photographers who are expected to be active from the 1990s to the present and future, and many unpublished works will be exhibited.
It will be a unique and valuable opportunity to experience the world of photography, which is a bit different from books, including talk shows by Ken Miller.

Ken Miller has been speaking in this exhibition as follows.

With the spread of inexpensive cameras that can be taken without special skills, taking pictures has become a part of everyday life, and the Internet and media are filled with photos. However, the photos were originally more special. For a long time, and even now, he has established a solid position as a field of fine art. Then, where is the boundaries between photographs that are full of the world and photographs as fine art?

"SHOOT -Photography of the Moment-" began with the question "What is art photography?" Anyone can take a picture. But most of them are not photographers. So what is a photographer? I like photos that simply pointed the lens to the events on the spot, and photos that clearly cut out my feelings. They may seem just to capture everyday moments, but they are photos with special power that leave a strong impression on the heart. There are impressive records that reflect daily life, some parts are sensible, exaggerated, parodyed, or romance is found in a trivial event.……。 I think good photographers are people who can make such expressions using tools that anyone can use.

The photographers who appear in this book also take pictures of everyday moments. Nowadays, photography in this style is also recognized as fine art, but until recently, snapshots were only snapshots.
Twenty-five years ago, Stephen Shore took a personal documentary that overturned the common sense, summarizing Nan Goldin's snapshot of his lifestyle, and sublimating it into fine art and fashion photography for the first time. "SHOOT" has become popular now, starting with them. He follows the tide of this style, that is, the work that simply cuts out everyday life.

In "SHOOT -Photography of the Moment-", you may occasionally encounter photos that anyone can take.
But I think it's a work that the photographer himself became a curator and chose as "the only image that speaks more deeply about the emotions of that moment," and the act of curation shows how to connect with us and cut out the air using photographs.
