This time, we will hold a photo exhibition [MICHAEL THOMPSON FIFTY CUTS] by Michael Thompson, a photographer active mainly in New York. This photo exhibition is Michael Thompson's first large solo exhibition, which will be held ahead of the world. |
 |
Michael Thompson studied under the master Irving Penn and became independent after being involved in the launch of the mode magazine "allure". After that, he worked on the portraits of Cava, a leading fashion magazine in the mode world, such as "VOGUE", "W", "Harper's Bazaar", "Interview", "Vanity Fair", "GQ", and "Mali Claire", as well as the celebrities appearing in those magazines, and his high technology has led the American fashion and celebrity photograph world.
The first collection of works published in 2005, "IMAGES," quickly gained a reputation as soon as it was published, and was featured in "New York Times" and "PEOPLE" magazines and many other newspapers and magazines. This collection of works, which were carefully made over five years, was not sold out immediately after its release, but was reprinted immediately by the voices of many people.
At the reception commemorating the release, many cultural celebrities, including Mariah Carly and Mariel Hemingway, rushed to the topic.
And in 2007, a collection of fans' long-awaited celebrity shots is also planned.
In this exhibition, in addition to the masterpieces included in the popular collection of works "IMAGES", valuable celebrity shots of Merrill Streap, Guinness Partrou, Julien Moore, Sting and others will be unveiled for the first time.
In addition, I would like to introduce the work of <RMK> that triggered this exhibition.
Most of the ads for the cosmetics brand RMK produced by makeup artist RUMIKO were shot in Michael's studio in NY.
In addition, in commemoration of the event, we will also sell limited cosmetics kits in collaboration with RMK and collaboration goods created with the image of Michael Thompson's work.
Please come and visit [MICHAEL THOMPSON FIFTY CUTS] where you can enjoy Michael's diverse worldview through the original print of Michael Thompson, the first landing in Japan. |

■Overview of the exhibition |
 |
In this exhibition, we will introduce 50 masterpieces by Michael Thompson, who has been a photographer for 15 years. All the selections of the works were done by Michael Thompson himself, resulting in a simple yet eloquent still life, a gorgeous portrait of celebrities, and a very conceptual and vivid fashion photography, and a truly diverse and persuasive collection. Most of the 50 works have been decorated with the world's top-mode magazines and magazines. Each point is backed by a polished sense and a very advanced shooting technique. This broad collection will be the best proof of the amazing fact that Michael Thompson has been a state-of-the-art photographer for many years in various genres.
Number of exhibited works: 50 points |
 |
[FASHION] |
 |
Fashion photography best tells Michael Thompson's leap in aesthetic sense.
Many of the fashion photographs in FIFTY CUTS show Thompson's attitude to seek endless possibilities and his inquisitiveness for image manipulation after shooting. A work with a candy color background on a model shot with a monochrome background (published in "W") is a remarkable example. [FIFTY CUTS] fashion photographs also include works in Italian Vogue, Flair, Dutch, and more. |
 |
[CELEBRITY] |
 |
When the cover of the magazine is booked, the celebrities will certainly appoint Michael Thompson for the camera. This is because in front of Thompson, who always has a calm attitude and is good at creating an atmosphere at the shooting scene, can relax any superstar at any moody store. That said, the portrait he takes is beyond the frame of so-called glammer shots. Nevertheless, the relaxed celebrities are willing to participate in dramatic settings that go beyond their limits. That's why Thompson is a masterpiece of masterpieces such as Guwinness Partrou's wonderful sexy shot (published in W) with a rough taste, and Julian Moore's glorious nude (published in Vanity Fair "Hollywood Portfolio") with the motif of Angle Grand Odalisk. |
 |
[STILL - LIFE] |
 |
Needless to say, all Michael Thompson's works have the perfect technique, but it is still life's work that shows his outstanding skills. And here too, you will be surprised at the breadth of Thompson's range of defense. From works that simply cut out the beauty of the brittle yet ephemeral butterfly wings, to works that combine skull and Middle Ages armor and expensive gemstones into dark and gothic assemblages. |
 |
[BEAUTY] |
 |
Michael Thompson's beauty photography has consistently a fantastic image from his early works. Each photo certainly reflects the concept of editing or commercial, but as you can see from the vivid images such as the dazzling light (RMK advertising visual) and the bright yellow skin and the blue eyes (bacaldi advertising campaign), the presence of the work is overwhelming.

I've always loved light. It's clear, but it's up to light, and light can reveal the details, and sometimes even look better than the real thing. And light changes in various ways like a chameleon. Direct lighting, indirect lighting, natural light, artificial light, light reflected from building walls, and sunlight through sunlight. So I cannot help but thank you for the eternal beauty of light itself and the countless changes that light brings to the scenery of our lives.
For the past 15 years, I have been involved in photography. There are differences between still life, fashion, and portraits, but everything is the same in front of the lens.
"Fifty Cuts" is a selection of works that I particularly like from 1991 to 2006. The emotions I experienced when shooting it from each image are mysteriously revived, and my heart resonates. In this way, the feeling of "connecting" with the image is the true reason I continue to take pictures. |
