Contents of the exhibition

From the '60s to the mid-1980s, the troupe called 'Angra', such as Situation Theater, Ceiling House, Black Tent, Free Theater, etc., created a unique world that was different from so-called commercial theaters. And the performance posters were created by top artists such as Tadanori Yokoo and Akira Uno, and are full of hot messages.
These are currently highly artistically evaluated, and only a limited number of them were produced for performances at that time, so the number of them still exists is small, and it is a valuable opportunity to release such masterpiece posters of such angle theater together.

The whole picture of the masterpiece poster is released!

This exhibition features approximately 100 masterpiece posters of a small theater drama called Angra, which played a part in the counterculture of the 1960s, carefully selected from the "Contemporary Theater Poster Collection", which has more than 20,000 Poster Harris Company's collection. These posters are currently highly artistically evaluated, and only a limited number of them were produced for performances at that time, so the existing number is small and are now valuable works of art. This is an attempt to get a bird's-eye view of the times and culture with posters.

From the 1960s to the 1970s, in theatrical world, the small theater movement (so-called angra theater) aimed at creating a world that is entirely different from the old-fashioned new drama, gained momentum, and Juro Kara, Shuji Terayama, Tadashi Suzuki, Noboru Sato, Kazumi Kushida, and others performed an experimental stage that was never before.

At this time, the poster that appeared as the flag of the Angra Theater Company had a synergistic effect with the stage. In a sense, this poster plays a leading role in the angle theater, provoking the times, and now exists as a symbol of it.

The casters of this angra drama include Tadanori Yokoo, Kiyoshi Awazu, Genpei Akasegawa, Akira Uno, Kuniyoshi Kaneko, Katsuyuki Shinohara, Katsuto Obe, Koga Hirano, Yosuke Inoue, Masamichi Oikawa, Ryoichi Enomoto, Kazuko Sawaichi Hanawa, Shizukazu Hayashi, and others. The posters made by their hands transcend the boundaries of merely posters of performance announcements, cutting out the hot 1960s and 1970s in Japan, and the messages emitted by the posters themselves continue to shine throughout the times.

It can be said that it is truly Japan Avant-garde, a masterpiece of Japanese posters reminiscent of the poster of "Russian Avant-garde" in the 1920s.

It is a valuable opportunity to release all of these masterpiece posters of Angra plays. By all means, I would like to see this angra drama poster, which is also a memory device of the times, not only in the theater world, but also young people interested in the art world and graphics, and many people who lived in the age of adventure in the 1960s and 1970s.
